What Have We Gotten Ourselves Into?
Algorithm and data
As I have been navigating the last few months and taking a step back from the “norm,” I find myself wondering what we have done to ourselves. Honestly, social media is hard. I have to work at posting to a blog, my personal page, and the Rooftop Prayer Warrior page every day. It can literally be a full-time job.
Although I currently have more control over my time, I still wonder how much I am impacting people around the globe. Yes, I have over 1,000 people connected on Facebook, but I don’t seem to reach many outside of that circle. I also take the time to review the friends I am connected with. I have removed connections with accounts that don’t post at least once a year, because a dead account does not help with circulation.
When you see a need that affects so many people on this planet, you want to reach them, but there is a cost. That cost is time, and we all know time is valuable. On the flip side, you also have to deal with algorithms. If your topic isn’t of interest, your content doesn’t circulate. Some creators get around this with clickbait. The title has something the algorithm will pick up and circulate, but as you read further or watch the video, you learn it has very little to do with the title that caught your attention. I really don’t want to be that person. I just want to put out direct information with a title that matches what I am trying to communicate.
So, I am going to keep posting as God leads, providing encouragement and information in the midst of all the garbage that is pushed in front of us every day. No clickbait, just honest, real material.
My final request is for you: What would you like to see more of on this blog or on my social media? Encouragement? Bible study? Practical help for everyday life? Let me know in the comments.
If you follow my personal page on Facebook, thank you. If you want to follow my Rooftop Prayer Warrior content, there is a new page for that, because I want to be able to post about my personal life without it affecting the circulation of Rooftop Prayer Warrior. You can find the new page at https://www.facebook.com/RooftopWarrior.
God calls us not to love the things of this world. When we follow Him instead, I believe we can use social media for good.
1 John 2:15-17 (ESV):
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
God is bigger than an algorithm.
